OVERVIEW

Runfest Port Macquarie is an annual running festival that takes place in the town. The event holds multiple races of different distances and even a multi event challenge called the ‘Treble Breakwall Buster’, where runners complete the 5km, 10km and Half Marathon on the same day. Thousands of locals and runners from across Australia partake in the event and they all receive a medal upon completion. After creating designs for Port Macquarie Runfest in 2023 during highschool, I got back in contact with the organiser of the event and was tasked to create medal designs for multiple Runfest events, including designs for the 2026 Runfest in Port Macquarie with a brand refresh of Runfest was also on the horizon and to be kept in mind.

CHALLENGE

The medals for this years event would use the same subject matter as the 2023 medals I design for Port Macquarie Runfest, so this selection was much simpler compared to the central coast designs. The tricky part was creating a design in the same style as the central coast designs, but still give this collection some individuality.

SOLUTION

To create this said individuality, I changed the actual medal shape from the ‘water splash’ corner features, to a more geometrical and layered composition which symbolises layers of rock used in Port Macquarie’s break wall. The circle feature returns from the Central Coast designs, this time with Port Macquarie Runfest’s logo and new refreshed purple taking center stage, bringing the collection together. A design treatment element is a running shirt for this year’s event and future ones to come. The base uses the new purple colour with large flowing lines of magenta and yellow, the events secondary colours.

This collection of medals and new running shirt not only celebrates the town’s community, iconic animals and landmarks, but also pays as a homage to my original designs in 2023 and my first freelance project undertaken.
